I originally got this idea from a Podcast I love: Happier with Gretchen Rubin. If you haven’t heard it before, check it out. In short, every week is a different topic on ways to make your life happier. At the end of each podcast, Gretchen gives one “Happier Hack” and they are very short, everyday tasks that can make your life easier or happier. After listening to her a few times, I found myself doing said tasks and coming up with my own along the way.
This blog post will grow monthly but anytime you need a quick tip you can implement into your everyday life, you will find them here. I hope you enjoy!
Happier Hack #1: The One-Minute Rule.
Do you often walk into your bedroom, kitchen, entry-way, or laundry room, put something down, and save the “putting away” for later? An example of this can be dropping a plate into the sink, throwing your shoes on the floor, or taking your jacket off and placing it on a chair. Every time you fall guilty to one of these habits, you are creating a larger to-do list that will likely be annoying later in the day or even in the week. By incorporating the “one-minute rule” into your life, each time you have a task that takes less than one-minute, you need to do it right away. For example; walk into your room to take off your sweater? Put that sweater away; Finish a meal and drop the dish into the sink? Clean that one dish right away; Take off your shoes by the front door when they belong in your bedroom? Take the ONE minute to walk into your bedroom and put them away. Using the one-minute rule will take away small tasks from your laundry list of to-do’s and replace it with a peace of mind. Less brain chaos equals a happier human… and a cleaner house.
Happier Hack #2: Pay It Forward.
Need a boost of happiness? Buy something for someone else. Research shows that every time you give rather than receive there is a higher boost in oxytocin than when you purchase something for yourself. If you are one of those people who fall guilty to an extra Amazon purchase to fill a loneliness void, think about purchasing that Amazon gift for someone else. Chances are you will spend less money and your brain will give you a boost of happiness upon giving. A few examples of this would be paying for the car behind you at Starbucks, buying ingredients to a favorite recipe and passing it along, buy one yoga or pilates class for a friend so they can join you, purchasing one of your favorite books to share with a friend, etc. The small gesture will go a long way and you will get that happy glow! An added bonus, purchasing a gift for someone’s child. Not only will the child be happy but that parent will never forget when you went the extra mile for their baby.
Happier Hack #3: Call Your Mom
Did you know that simply hearing the sound of your Mother’s voice releases oxytocin in your body? According to a 2010 study, hearing the sound of Mama’s voice can reduce stress and anxiety. When we talk to our Mom it brings back the feeling of having her hold us or hug us when we were young and in times of worry. Wow – your subconscious is really cool. This is not to say you won’t have conflict with your Mom and you may not have “that type of relationship” but this study also says that when you call your mom, it also repairs a brokeness and brings on empathy. Give that a thought!
