Summer Cocktails: Blueberry Peach Margarita, Sparkling Rose Sangria, Rum in the Sun, Mexican Mule, and Classic Mint Julep

If you had a chance to take a look at my “End Of Summer Activities” Post, you saw that planning a neighborhood barbecue was on our list.  If this is something you would like to plan, I suggest sprucing up the fun at this gathering by adding a signature cocktail to your menu.  It’s a natural conversation starter, makes your menu stand out, and changes up the “norm”.

If you have a signature cocktail that’s delicious and you love to make, bring it out.  If you need some ideas, see below for some out-of-the-box recipes sure to please a number of folks arriving at your home!

Summer Cocktails:

Blueberry Peach Margarita:

Summer Cocktails: Blueberry Peach Margarita

Ingredients (makes 2 servings):

  • 2 lime wedges
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, divided
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped peaches
  • 2 cups ice, divided
  • 3 oz tequila
  • 2 oz triple sec

Directions:

  1. For a salt rim, rub a lime wedge over the rim of your glass and dip into a small tray of salt.
  2. Divide blueberries and lime juice between the 2 glasses and muddle.  Add the peaches on top.
  3. Place 1 cup of the ice cubes into a cocktail shaker; add the tequila and triple sec.  Shake well to blend.
  4. Place remaining cubes in glasses and top with the margarita mixture.

Sparkling Rose Sangria:

Summer Cocktails: Sparkling Rose Sangria

Ingredients (makes six servings):

  • 1 cup water
  • cups frozen or fresh strawberries
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 750 ml bottle dry rosé wine
  • 6 oz vodka
  • cups sliced strawberries (fresh)
  • 20 oz lime raspberry sparkling water
  • 1-pint raspberries

Directions:

  1. Add water, frozen strawberries, and sugar to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer 10 minutes and use a potato masher to mash the strawberries. Simmer another 5 minutes and allow to cool.
  2. Push mixture through a fine colander and toss any liquid/lumps that didn’t make it through.
  3. Add strawberry mixture, wine, vodka, and sliced strawberries to a large pitcher. Let sit for at least one hour.
  4. Just before serving, add sparkling water and raspberries. Serve over ice.

Rum in the Sun:

Summer Cocktails: Rum in the Sun

Ingredients (makes one serving):

  • 2 oz White Rum
  • .5 oz French vermouth
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 dash of grenadine

Directions:

  1. Shake ingredients well with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  2. Optional: Adding a maraschino cherry

Mexican Mule:

Summer Cocktails: Mexican Mule

Ingredients (makes one serving):

  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • .5 oz lime juice
  • .5 oz pineapple juice
  • .5oz ginger syrup

Directions

  1. Combine the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and stir.
  2. Strain into a glass with ice.
  3. Garnish with a splash of spiced rum.

Classic Mint Julep:

Summer Cocktails: Classic Mint Julep

Ingredients (makes one serving):

  • 1/4 oz simple syrup
  • 8 mint leaves
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • Garnishes: Bitters and mint sprig

Directions:

  1. In a Julep cup or rocks glass, lightly muddle the mint and syrup.
  2. Add the bourbon and pack tightly with crushed ice.
  3. Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside.
  4. Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome and garnish with a mint sprig and few optional drops of bitters.
